Fire consumed the old two-story capitol building in 1852, which created a new urgency to complete the Statehouse project as government offices were forced to relocate to various buildings around Columbus. While some suspected arson, the exact cause of the fire remains a mystery to this day. With the Statehouse exterior nearing completion by 1854, Columbus architect Nathan Kelley was hired to supervise the design and construction of the building's interiors. One of his major tasks would be to provide a system for heating and ventilation in the building, which had not been considered previously.

During calendar years 2007 and 2008 approximately 70,000 visitors participated with organized tours of the building each of the years. In 1901, facing significant crowding several changes were considered including a completely new statehouse designed to more closely resemble the national Capitol building in Washington. Cost prohibitive, it was decided that the Ohio Supreme Court would move to a separate building on the east side of Capitol Square, and to give the court the prestige of its own building. The new building, named the Judiciary Annex, was constructed of the same Columbus limestone as the Statehouse. Neoclassical on the exterior, the interior spaces, especially the grand central staircase are Beaux Arts in style. The building was the work of Cincinnati architect Samuel Hannaford, and was completed in two years at the cost of $375,000.

The rotunda floor features octagonal contrasting stone blocks—over 4,000 of them—laid in an intricate spiral geometric pattern; from it large, arched openings led to the main corridors. The house and senate chambers featured coffered ceilings with decorative plaster and colored glass skylights, white marble podium columns, and additional architectural detail. A Statehouse field trip gives educators the opportunity to bring lesson plans to life on subjects including history, government, civics, art and architecture. The Ohio Statehouse Museum Education Center provides guided tours for school groups in grades fourth and up. Due to the nature of the space as a working government building and the complexity of the material covered on tour, guided tours cannot be booked for students younger than fourth grade. However, teachers and chaperones are welcome to bring younger students to the Statehouse and lead a self-guided tour.

Local leaders react to pro-Palestine protest on Ohio …

There have been no defaults, and to date, OMAP has generated more than $5.6 million in estimated savings for local governments. COLUMBUS, Ohio — More than two dozen people were arrested Thursday night on the Ohio State University main campus as pro-Palestinian protesters called for the school to divest from Israel. Caleb Atwater, Samuel Lewis and Calvin Stowe were behind common schools in Ohio. The 1851 Ohio Constitution guarantees there will be state funding for public education for Ohioans. When students bring their own lunches, the group may eat outside on the grounds of Capitol Square or inside.

The Ohio Statehouse Museum features Ohio’s Constitutions in the central exhibit area where pages of the historic documents are on display. Visitors may view handwritten pages from the 1802 and the 1851 Constitutions. Ohio Statehouse Museum Education Center offers exhibits that encourage visitors to participate in the state government process by making decisions, expressing their opinions, comparing viewpoints and by voting.

As more offices and work rooms were required, large spaces would be subdivided into smaller areas. The most prominent example was the conversion to offices of the four open courts that occupied areas on the interior of the building. These open areas were from top to bottom of the structure and were intended to admit light and fresh air to the inner reaches of the building. The advent of electric lighting coupled with the need for space meant that levels of offices would come to occupy these large open areas. The fifty-four rooms the building originally held increased to 317 rooms by 1989.

Thirteen Democrats voted against the bill, including Rep. Juanita O. Brent (D-Cleveland), who testified War on Drugs-style policies give her pause. Rep. Cecil Thomas (D-Cincinnati) said he shared similar reservations at first, but sat through committee testimony on the bill and changed his tune. The bill would require public schools to create an internet safety policy. The legislation also mandates grades 6-12 to have courses on the negative side of social media. Ohio senators have passed a bill to limit cell phone use in schools, but it allows local districts to decide on the best practices for their students.

PUBLIC TOURS

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A broad, bipartisan majority of the Ohio House passed legislation Wednesday to ratchet up penalties for those who knowingly sell or unknowingly possess drugs laced with fentanyl. Still, 37 “no” votes, while a break from Washington’s ironclad support for the Jewish state, fell short of the opposition bloc progressives had hoped to muster. Thirty-nine Democrats had voted “no” on Friday on the rule to allow the foreign aid package to come to the House floor, a target that progressives just missed on Saturday on the Israel bill.

Grounds

Hudson River artist Thomas Cole came in third and, even though his design was not selected, elements of his plan made it into the final scheme and were incorporated into the building. Indeed, Cole’s painting, The Architect’s Dream, has components that look very much like the Ohio Statehouse. Construction of the building, which was accomplished in part by penitentiary labor and with the local and highly fossiliferous Columbus limestone, began in 1839 and followed a rocky course strewn with political conflict.

Like Strickland, current governor Mike DeWine uses the Statehouse office on a regular basis, although his staff remains based in the Riffe Center. As the state government grew in size office space became a problem; over time the state moved offices to four different locations in Columbus. Various schemes to enlarge the Statehouse were floated over the years, but none went forward.

This freely available resource empowers the public with authoritative knowledge that deepens their understanding and appreciation of the built environment. Located in downtown Columbus, visitors are encouraged to enter the Statehouse through the Third Street entrance as guided tours depart from the Map Room. If you're taking a self-guided tour, start at the Map Room to pick up a Self-Guided Tour and Cell Phone Audio Tour Brochure. Each state’s capitol building is a unique symbol of democracy and a gathering place for important events in history. Ohio’s capitol building, known as the Ohio Statehouse, is as significant as any. While there are older buildings that serve a similar function, most of those were originally colonial assembly buildings.

The Capitol Square complex includes the Ohio Statehouse, Senate Building and Atrium. The buildings are not only working government offices, but also a magnificent monument to the people and the period during which Ohio’s democracy was founded and formed. Cole's nephew, William Henry Bayless, a Steubenville native, was apprenticed in the office of Alexander Jackson Davis. Lou Tobin, executive director of the Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association, said Ohio’s drug trafficking laws are weak when compared with surrounding states. They also know they can add fentanyl to their products to make it more addictive, and exploit how hard it can be for prosecutors to prove that they knew their drugs were cut with fentanyl. A punitive approach to drug policy doesn’t reduce drug use, said Dr. Michael Brumage, a physician with years of experience in systems-level public health. Criminalization policies, while usually well-intended, will just send people to darker corners to seek more concealable substances, rather than addressing underlying problems of substance use disorders.

By comparison, the Statehouse itself took 22 years from start to finish and cost approximately $1.3 million. The difference in cost and time to completion indicates differences in how the buildings were constructed. The Statehouse is more akin to a castle or cathedral, with thick load-bearing walls of stone.

The inside area to eat lunches is near the Map Room in the hallway with green benches. One of the most notable tour programs available at the Ohio Statehouse was named "The Portals of History", which used the building as a stage to introduce characters from the state's history. As a tour group made their way through the building, they encountered living history presenters portraying notable individuals from the past. It also holds a memorial sign on one of its pillars showing the exact location that Abraham Lincoln, prior to his run for president, stood to give a speech on the building's steps. The Fraternal Order of Police and the Buckeye Sheriff’s Association testified in support of the bill as well.

The legislation bumps this to a first-degree felony, which increases the potential prison sentence to three to 11 years. The bill passed the House with backing from law enforcement and prosecutors who said it provides them another tool to crack down on traffickers of fentanyl, a powerful opioid present in four out of every five of the 4,915 fatal overdoses in Ohio in 2022. Ohio typically exhibits one of the highest overdose fatality rates of any state in the nation. While all Democrats voted in favor of aid to Ukraine and all but Ms. Tlaib supported funding to Taiwan, 37 left-leaning Democrats defected to vote against the Israel aid bill. They said before the vote that they opposed unfettered aid to Israel that could be used in its offensive in Gaza.

Capitol was enlarged to its present form, with the large white dome that would be imitated on many US state capitol buildings. The two buildings became crowded, and decay from heavy usage and inadequate maintenance was evident. Both buildings survived despite proposals made to either demolish one or both buildings, or remodel them substantially. In 1989, a massive project commenced to restore the buildings to the splendor their original builders envisioned as well as make them useful and practical government buildings. Original furniture was sought for return to the building when possible and modern reproductions of long gone items such as carpets and light fixtures were created.

The Ohio Statehouse, a Symbol of Democracy

Spectrum News posted video on social media of police escorting handcuffed protesters. Another video posted online shows police and protesters clashing, with officers using shields to shove people to the ground. Columbus police have not released details about the shooting as of noon Monday, including any identifying information about the person who suffered the fatal gunshot. However, the victim was taken by medics to a nearby hospital where they died. The seat of our state government is filled with beautiful touches and hidden bits of history that can be discovered by way of daily tours. The Ohio Statehouse is a National Historic Landmark, designated as an outstanding example of Greek Revival public architecture.

A cholera epidemic began in Columbus, prompting widespread flight to the countryside by residents. Once the epidemic subsided, work on the Statehouse continued, interrupted only by intermissions during the harsh Ohio winters. When the cornerstone was laid on July 4, 1839, the commission was still without a final design. Consultation with New York architect Alexander Jackson Davis resulted in a composite design that merged some key features of the three winning entries, but it was rejected as being too expensive. Henry Walter, the first-place winner of the design contest, was chosen to supervise construction of the new capitol and he began working on another composite design that was based largely on the design of third-place winner, Thomas Cole. Cole had a personal friendship with one of the commissioners, a man named William A. Adams who was from Steubenville.

The opposition to the Israel aid represented a minority of Democrats, but reflected the deep resistance to unconditional aid and the divisions in the party on Gaza. Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland represented a notable new “no” vote among Democrats, and other standouts included Representatives Donald S. Beyer Jr. of Virginia, Earl Blumenauer of Oregon and John Garamendi of California. The plan, laid out in a rule that passed on Friday, was concocted to capitalize on the pools of support for each part of the $95 billion package, while preventing opposition to any one piece from taking down all of them.

Fourteen of those Democrats voted on Saturday in favor of aid to Israel, while 12 Democrats who voted to allow the package on the floor on Friday then cast votes against the funding itself. The Capital Atrium was completed in 1993 to connect the Statehouse and Senate Building. Prior to completion, the open walkway space was known as "Pigeon Run," where hundreds of pigeons gathered on the rooftops making travel between the two buildings challenging. Now, the only bird within the atrium is Pigeon Pete, a stuffed pigeon who is perched on the Senate Building entrance to represent the bird's place in the building's history.

These three linked structures define today’s Ohio Statehouse, a working state capitol where the daily business of state government is carried on. Management of the complex has been placed in the hands of a single agency, the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board, which has permanent review and approval power over all work undertaken in the buildings or on the grounds of Capitol Square. Significant sculptures and memorials are located on the square, including one dedicated to Christopher Columbus and another to President William McKinley. The These Are My Jewels statue commemorates important Ohio Civil War-era military and political figures. On the east side of the Senate Building the Ohio Veterans’ Memorial was constructed during the 1990–1996 renovation.

The Rotunda floor consists of nearly 5,000 pieces of hand-cut marble from Portugal, Italy, and Vermont. With the 1795 Treaty of Greene Ville, they ceded much of the land that would become Ohio in exchange for promises of peace in the northwest areas. Arthur St. Clair opposed statehood for Ohio and lost his job as territorial governor.

Ohio is the Ice Cream Capital of the Universe

In addition, linked on this page under the “Teacher Resources” tab, are educator resources that you may download to prepare you and your students for your Statehouse visit, or they can be used as a post-visit review and assessment tool. Isaiah Rogers, a well known architect based in Cincinnati at the time, was recruited to supervise the final stages of the Statehouse's construction. During his tenure, Rogers oversaw completion of the building's interior and coordinated work on the distinctive rotunda and its enclosing cupola. One of the building's most distinctive exterior features is the low, conical roof atop the cupola, positioned where many viewers expect to see a dome.

The videos are also available on this webpage to watch before and after your Capitol visit. The Ohio Statehouse is a National Historic Landmark, one of only 2,000 or so landmarks in the country. The Statehouse was given this designation because of its great historic and architectural significance on a national scale. Some changes have been made to the Statehouse over the years, including the Senate Building (1901); underground garage (1965); Capitol Atrium (1994) and Ohio Veteran’s Plaza (1996). Visitors may enter the building at Third Street or the South sliding doors in the underground parking garage on the Green Level. The Statehouse features a central recessed porch with a colonnade of a forthright and primitive Greek Doric mode, built of Columbus limestone that was quarried on the west banks of the Scioto River.

Open excavations were refilled with earth, and Capitol Square became open pasture for livestock. Democratic state Rep. Cecil Thomas, a Cincinnati Democrat and former police officer who voted yes, listed off in a floor speech a slew of troubling data points on overdose deaths from around the state. That included two Ohio State University students who fatally overdosed on fentanyl, believing they were taking the study aid drug Adderall. The bill is fairly sweeping, also increasing penalties for human trafficking, which sponsors described as organizations coercing people who are dependent on drugs to act as distributors. While very popular for school field trips, the Statehouse welcomes a wide variety of group and bus tours. Visitors of all ages can appreciate the Greek Revival architecture, the art and historic artifacts on display, and the fascinating activities of a working state government building.

The most expedient way to solve space problems was to work within the stone shell of the building. So the light wells were filled in with as many as five floors of offices; rooms were repeatedly subdivided; and basement spaces, where mechanical systems and horse stables were originally housed, were taken over for office use. The building’s fifty-plus rooms had been subdivided into more than 300; there were nearly a hundred different air-conditioning systems; and many dead-end corridors and confusing circulation patterns represented a real hazard. In addition, there was no appropriate and secure way for important government officials to arrive other than through a garage beneath the plaza. The Ohio Statehouse is the most significant Greek Revival building in the state and its design places it high on any list of architecturally significant state capitols. A twenty-two-year construction period and a long list of architects suggest that completing a building to serve as the seat of Ohio government was no easy task.

In 1990 a project began to restore the statehouse and the annex to its original condition (or as close to it as possible). The new statehouse, which opened in 1861, had more than fifty rooms and incorporated some innovative features. It also had forced-air central heat; during the first winter occupants were overjoyed when interior temperatures reached sixty degrees. Flush toilets were in small rooms located in the massive stonework of the cupola base, and were reached by exiting onto balconies in the light wells; water was supplied by rain-fed storage tanks over the east and west porches.

Home Design, DIY, and Budget Decor Tutorials

There's bound to be setbacks along the way, but the key is to never lose sight of the bigger picture. They’re nearly the same size, and the black/brown finish is made with real wood veneer which is ideal for painting. Malm chests are mass produced and very common to find used on your local Facebook Marketplace or OfferUp, if you want to save $$. There were several listed in my area, but I wanted to be certain that ours was in perfect working condition so we paid full price at our local Ikea. Be the first to know about new projects & updates with weekly recap delivered straight to your inbox. I’ve been really digging rich brown and burgundy tones lately, so I was excited to try the color Ganache (in eggshell) out on a piece of furniture!

Kitchen: Before

Priming is always a good idea, particularly with furniture that receives heavy use. Little Greene Paint Company sent me primer and paint from their new Sweet Treats collection to try out. We filled the nail holes and seams with plastic wood, then sanded everything smooth with 220 grit. This is our go-to technique for a beautiful seamless result.

New House Before Tour + Design Plans

Living Room

Is it curled up by the fire in a snowed in cabin sipping wine and reading? Is it a large kitchen with family and friends cooking and chatting? Is it a quiet, organized workspace to help you stay focused and inspired? Maybe a relaxed beach house with natural woods and soft colors to reflect simpler living. No matter what your dream scene is, you can recreate that feeling in your own home.

Then, secure the base to the dresser with wood screws (we used two on each side). Pre-drill your holes first, and make sure they are going into the center line of the sides below to avoid splitting. Add the front trim piece, making sure to line it up evenly on both sides. One of my favorite ways to get a real custom look is to tile up to the ceiling.

We used a long straight edge to ensure everything matched up on all sides. Since the two lower front pieces rely on the strength of the wood glue, we kept the clamps on for at least an hour to allow the glue to dry before removing them. Apply wood glue to one of the side pieces and use bar clamps to hold it in place. A dream kitchen (done on a budget – everything including labor, cabinets, tile, lighting, flooring, beams, appliances, furniture, accessories … $28k). I love finding ways to add elements to our home that reflect our personalities and tell a story (as inexpensively as possible!).

The Malm chest is 31 3/4” tall which is about the max I’d want as a nightstand, so I didn’t want to raise it up any more. We planned to add a wood base to reinforce the bottom, and attach feet to that. If you’re looking for a stylish nightstand with plenty of storage (without spending a fortune) this is the Ikea hack for you! Find out how we took this Ikea Malm chest from boring and basic to designer-inspired nightstand in this step by step tutorial. Before starting any new home project, I load up on inspiration to get a clear sense of what I want. My favorite way to do this is Pinterest (I’m constantly pinning for the future!) where I take mental notes of the mood that is evoked from each photo and decide what I want my environment to be.

We were broken down, ripped apart, and empty at times. But when the dust settled, we had transformed into something we once couldn't imagine was possible. Everything had to be stripped so that it could be rebuilt in a more beautiful way. We needed to overcome those struggles to earn our worth and appreciation.

Step 8: Prime, paint, protect

And before that happened, I needed to finish remodeling it. After college, I wasted no time getting married and spending my twenties obsessing over real estate. We bought three homes, extensively renovated them, and made plans to continue on a path to early retirement. We had what many would consider to be the "perfect life." Technically sanding is also optional, but I’d highly recommend it for better paint adhesion.

jenna sue design

I found someone on Ebay selling thin wood cutouts, asked him to customize them to our wedding anniversary, painted them the same color as our wall and nailed them up. Instant (yet subtle) impact for little cost and effort. Even if it’s small and looks funny or didn’t turn out how you planned (see our DIY barn door above? it’s crooked. But it has character and a story and we love it). My life was everything most 29-year-olds dreamed of—I had a devoted husband, successful business, beautiful home, and supportive friends and family. I had worked hard for the American dream, and thought I was exactly where I was supposed to be. These nightstands were intended for the primary suite in the new house renovation, but I’m almost wishing they could stay in our room now.

The blood, sweat, and tears were worth it—I've come to learn that they always are. This makeover is just another example of the transformative power of trim and paint. After the paint dried overnight, I finished it off with three coats of matte polycrylic for protection.

It has become the heart of our home and allows us to continue to host important gatherings and celebrations—and we love knowing that our guests enjoy themselves and feel welcome. I'm currently under contract with my next rehab and have never been so excited. Now I'm driven by a deeper reason to pursue this calling. It's part of a grand plan that has become my new purpose for living—my oxygen. Armed with the lessons and motivation from my past, I'll continue to renovate and invest in real estate, allowing myself the freedom to fulfill my need to travel.

It was quiet in that big house, apart from the occasional sound of a hammer from the contractor in the next room. I passed the time alone at my desk, daydreaming of the wonderful places I'd travel to next with my new found freedom. Slowly, though, the desire to decorate began to reappear. A daunting to-do list became less overwhelming, and even enjoyable at times. The passion that had once burned out suddenly found a new spark, and it was beginning to reignite. Suddenly, "we" became "I", and I had to come to terms with the fact that the future we had been working toward for seven years was never going to happen.

I chose the black/brown Malm because it has a layer of real wood veneer, and the stain/lacquer can be sanded off. Bare wood is the ideal surface for paint to ensure a durable, lasting finish. This step is optional if you don’t plan to add furniture feet.

The right paint color can be a great alternative to get the same feel of dark natural wood. Whether it’s just you, your family, or anyone who enters your home—you want it to feel welcoming. We love to entertain so we modified our home to fulfill this by knocking out our dining room wall, reconfiguring our kitchen and building a huge table for friends and family to gather. By designing your home to work for you, life becomes easier you’re able to focus on what matters most. By the time I returned to the states, home improvement was the last thing on my mind. I was ready to sell all of my possessions, trading them in for a life rich with adventure and experiences instead.

It helps me piece together those details and gets the wheels in motion for the many different ways I can make the space work. This charming six bedroom cottage nestled in the California mountains was my biggest renovation challenge to date. Over the course of six months, the dark and dated cabin was transformed into a bright and welcoming home, earning a feature spread in Country Living. While my divorce put me back at square one in many ways, the skills and experience gained were more valuable than the houses themselves. It may not be as easy or move as fast, but we're all in control of creating our present and setting up for the future. That sense of responsibility is incredibly motivating, and can push you to do more than you would if you had a safety net or someone else to fall back on. One day it dawned on me that this house and I had been growing together since the beginning.

But it didn't feel like I had reverted back to my former self, though. I was a different person in a much happier state of mind, doing the work because I wanted to and not because it was part of a routine. In the months I spent backpacking through Southeast Asia, I was free. There were no rules or responsibilities, no schedule, no projects to finish or errands to run.

Even if you’re not entertaining a crowd, this is the place where your family will create lifetime memories so you want to facilitate that as much as possible. Create a safe environment where your family feels comfortable and loved. Designate fun areas so children can express themselves and explore their creativity. Make other spaces a retreat so you can unwind at the end of the day, feel calm in the present moment and regroup for tomorrow. Along with creating vision boards and building plans for homes, I realized I can design the life of my dreams, too.

I met incredible people from around the world, learned new languages and cultures, and took more risks. Leaving home was the best decision I'd ever made and my world was forever changed. I think I’ll just have to refinish our existing nightstands—I’m in love with this color and the richness it adds. Flip the dresser over, apply wood glue along the bottom and align the plywood base on top.

Avoid designing bedrooms in the southeast or northeast side of the house as it can result in health issues or disputes in the family. In the Vastu house plan for a north facing house, the main door should be in the north direction. Even in the north direction, the fifth step or pada is believed to be the most auspicious one, meant to bring you wealth, because it is the house of lord Kubera. The best directions for bathroom in a north-facing house, as per Vastu, are south of south-west or west of north-west. Septic tanks should not be in the north, north-east or east direction. As per the Vastu plan for north facing house, you should not have trees in the north side of your home. It is a misconception that any one particular direction is good and the others are bad. According to Vastu Shastra, all directions are good, provided they adhere to the some principles. For example, it is important to note the placement of the main door.

Metal turtles kept in the north or the north-west direction can bring good luck, especially related to career. Keep a money plant in the north corner to allow positive energy flow. One can design the living room in the northeast direction in a house with a north facing entrance, as per Vastu. Another option one can consider for designing a living room is the northwest corner.

Now it’s time to add doors, windows, furniture, appliances, any other fixtures to complete your floor plan. Most of the symbols, shapes, and icons can be found in our floor plan symbol libraries. Besides, you can draw the symbols and upload them to your own library. Cedreo gives you the tools to rapidly create floor plans without any special CAD or 3D design background. With almost no learning curve and access to video tutorials and support, you’ll quickly be able to start using Cedreo to accelerate your design process and produce stunning project visuals. Your floor plan may be of an office layout, a warehouse or factory space, or a home. You can even create a floor plan of event space and conventions. "RoomSketcher is brilliant – the professional quality floor plans I have created have improved our property advertising immensely." The garden should be either in the north or east direction, according to Vastu Shastra. Ideally, place small plants in the north direction and fruit-bearing trees in the east direction. Ensure that there are no large trees on the north side of the house so that the house is not obscured by its shadow.

You can also choose one of our existing layouts and temples and modify them to your needs. Build walls, add doors, windows and openings, then set your dimensions. Create detailed and precise floor plans that reflect your room's appearance, including the room walls and windows. With this process, you can make more informed decisions about how your space will look, including correct furniture placement and decor choices. Having an accurate floorplan of your space is extremely useful for making informed design decisions and avoiding costly mistakes.

In a north-facing home, the safety locker should be kept in the south, facing the north. The door of the locker should preferably open to the north, which is the direction of ‘Kubera’ (the god of wealth) as per Vastu. Do not place the locker in the north-east corner, as it would cause loss of wealth.

Avoid constructing a heavy pillar on the northast side in a north facing house. As per Vastu, such a pillar can create lots of problems in life. The bathroom and septic tanks accumulate negative energy from the house.

North-facing homes are considered auspicious, because north is the direction of Kuber or the God of wealth. However, when designing the house entrance it is essential to take into account various Vastu rules and eliminate any Vastu dosha that may exist. Light fittings positioned along the north and east walls bring positivity and good energy. Place the workstation facing the north direction and ensure that there is a wall behind you.

Also, a house may be considered good or bad owing to the placement of the furniture, colours chosen for the rooms as well as the astrological chart of the family members. According to Vastu Shastra, east, north and north-east-facing homes are most auspicious. However, this is not the sole determinant for the entry of positive energy into your household.

For a north-facing plot make the boundary walls in the north and east thin and small, compared to the walls in the south and west direction. Ensure that the slope of the north-facing plot is not in the south-west direction, as this can cause loss of wealth. It is better to have the slope of the plot in the north or the east direction. A plot with extension in the north-east direction is auspicious and brings prosperity.

Fish fillets marinated in south Indian spices and deep fried. It’s hard to put into words how uniquely special of a place Baja Subs is, but once you step foot inside this tiny market/convenience store in Northridge, you’ll start to understand. Yes, you can come here for a pack of cigarettes, a Diet Coke, and a turkey sandwich from behind the bar, but that’d be missing the point entirely.

Location and Contact

And with so many regional versions of the mixed-rice dish to try (like Hyderabadi, Karachi, and Afghani, just to name a few), there’s plenty of opportunities for you to find your favorite. From Artesia to Culver City to Little Bangladesh, these are the spots you need to be ordering from when that biryani craving hit. Boiled eggs and Basmati ricecooked with special Vijayawada sauce. This shared food history is why Biriyani Kabob House is a broadly South Asian restaurant, serving dishes that could be considered Indian, Bangladeshi, or Pakistani. The main differences between each country’s cuisine have to do with what’s abundant on their land, along with various cultural and religious factors. As for kebabs and biryani, Karim says they are executed similarly across all three cuisines. The only difference, he claims, is that Bangladeshi biryani, compared to that of India and Pakistan, is less spicy and also a bit sweeter, on account of ingredients like cinnamon and nutmeg.

Abhiruchi Grill Special

Cauliflower seasoned with ginger, garlic, onion, Indian spices & skewered in Tandoor. Chunks of paneer marinated in spices and grilled in tandoor. Soon after the sun goes down, the restaurant, which is open every day from 11 a.m. Abu Daher, a longtime friend of Karim’s who owns a mechanic shop nearby and eats at Biriyani Kabob House several times a week, says that, more often than not, all of the 10 tables are occupied.

Don’t be scared off by the fact that Paradise Biryani Pointe has over 45 locations across the US—great biryani is great biryani and PBP cooks up plenty of it. At the Fairfax location (just south of Little Ethiopia), it’s all about the biryani. There are several different kinds on the menu ranging from paneer to shrimp, but we like the chicken best, which arrives moist every time (no easy task for a slow-cooked dish like biryani). We prefer to order it spicy, but just know that the chefs don’t hold back on the heat. Boneless chicken cubes marinated in house spices and deep fried.

With Mobile Link, you are taken care of before the next power outage. Home or standby generators are the more reliable option in terms of supplying electricity to your whole home and these are what we will focus on. Battery backups are also gaining popularity; these can be small devices that can power just a few appliances, or a large power bank that can supply energy to your whole home.

Home backup power. Comfort. Security. Convenience.

That’s just the average, though, so you should check what your specific appliances require. You should always find a model that can handle more than you think you’ll need, just in case. You should expect to pay $1,500 at the least and $7,500 at the most, depending on the type of generator you need and the cost of labor in your area.

From 800 watts to 2 Megawatts

Some models conduct self-diagnosis tests to keep on top of things, which can help. Takes up space in your yard — These are quite bulky systems, with some measuring up to 50 inches in length. These need to be situated a safe distance from any windows and doors as well; up to 5 feet away is recommended, so make sure you have the appropriate space to accommodate it before you invest. Portable generators should be more than 20 feet away from your home according to the CDC, with the exhaust facing away from your property. Use may be sporadic — These are a backup resource at the end of the day, which means you may end up installing it and barely ever using it. Adds value to your home — It may be expensive, but a home generator will add value to your home once it’s installed.

Her favorite thing to test has to be air purifiers, as the information provided and the difference between performances is extensive. However, there's lots to consider before you purchase a whole house generator. This guide will explain how generators work, how much they cost, and other pros and cons of getting a home generator installed. The Honeywell 10kW Home Generator had the quietest engine of the whole house generators we evaluated, with a relatively low 57 decibels of noise. Installing a whole house generator or its transfer switch is a job best done by an experienced professional to ensure compliance with local safety codes. They’re built with longevity in mind, but running any type of engine constantly will cause wear and tear on batteries, belts, hoses and fluids.

Find The Right Home Backup Generator For You

Assess your essential appliances and systems that need backup power during outages. This evaluation will help you determine the generator’s capacity that suits your needs without overspending. To determine how much power you’ll need for your generator, you can either use an online wattage calculator, the wattage information on your appliances or your electrical bill. We recommend multiplying the total wattage of your appliances by 1.5 to give yourself a safe margin of error. A small to medium-size house in the U.S. typically uses a minimum of 5,000 to 7,000 watts, so you should expect most generators to have a minimum of 8,500 to 10,000 watt outputs.

The #1 selling brand of standby generators

With a yes or no based on whether a generator included overload protection, each product gained or lost points totaling 5% of the total ranking. Each generator was evaluated based on whether or not it offered a load management option, which is a popular add-on for many generator inquirists. Whole house generators can run quite loudly (65 decibels on the low end to 69+ on the high end), so it’s important to take that range into consideration when purchasing and placing your generator.

Prices start from $2,000, but most cost around $3,000 - $5,000, depending on the brand. Generally, the more it costs, the more power it can supply, so only pay for what you need. You will also need to consider the installation expense and the necessary fuel to power it. The best whole house generator is the one that fits best with the power requirements of your home and the appliances you need it to run.

You can add these items below to accurately reflect your homes specific backup power needs. Selecting whole house provides a backup generator recommendation based on your home's size and corresponding outlets and lighting requirements and assumes natural gas appliances in the baseline calculation. You can add these items below to accurately reflect your home's specific backup power needs.

Each generator’s noise level was evaluated and from there was scored based on the loudness (or softness) of its average level. If, for example, you wanted to power a window air conditioning unit, your immersion water heater and a microwave, you’d need a generator with a 10,000-watt output to be safe. Whole house generators come in various sizes and capacities, each with a corresponding price range. Smaller generators that power essential circuits will typically be more budget-friendly than larger units that supply power to the entire house. Liquid-cooled generators pump coolant through the engine block. This coolant absorbs heat from the engine, then is cycled through to the radiator, where it cools off, then moves back to the engine to maintain an appropriate temperature.

The options below will help you understand how the entire process works, what your financing options are, and how to choose the right backup power solution. Reliable — A whole house generator offers a reliable and constant (if you're hooked up to a gas line) supply of electricity should your area be prone to power outages. It provides peace of mind knowing that even if the power goes out, you can continue as you were. Plus, these run 24/7, 7 days a week, so you can rest assured you’re always covered. This can be especially crucial if you lose power during a storm — a generator can keep your sump pumps working, helping prevent your basement from flooding. As the leading home generator brand, Generac’s Guardian series generators, once again, set them apart from competition.

Home Backup Generators: What Do I Need to Know?

Be sure to purchase the right type of generator for the fuel you’re looking to use, or check to see if it can be easily converted from one fuel source to the other (most can be). Generac Guardian 3-Phase 20kW Automatic Standby Generator Wi-Fi Enabled runs about $5,599 on average. The Generac PowerPact 7,500 Watt Standby Generator runs about $2,049 on average. If you have a small home or need fewer watts of power, the Generac PowerPact 7,500 Watt Standby Generator is a great option. The PowerPact includes most of the same features as Generac’s larger models while requiring the smallest footprint of those we’ve ranked.

Step 2: Installation

A Kohler home generator costs $2,700 to $16,000 depending on size, ranging from 6 to 48 kW. Kohler generators run on natural gas or liquid propane, feature remote smartphone monitoring, and include an automatic transfer switch to turn on automatically during power outages. Generac generators cost $2,000 to $5,000 for a 7 to 24 kW whole-house unit, plus $3,000 to $5,000 for installation. Generac’s standby generators turn on automatically during power outages and run on natural gas or liquid propane.

Plan for an extended power outage and protect everything that matters to you. Schedule a free quote and receive a 5 year warranty with purchase. Many get their first introduction to portable generators when they need emergency power.

This engine drives an alternator to produce electricity, which is then converted to the appropriate voltage and frequency for household use. A whole-home generator costs $30 to $170 per day to run all day depending on the size and fuel source. Whole-house 15 to 20 kW standby generators consume 133 to 330 cubic feet of natural gas or 3.16 to 3.45 gallons of liquid propane per hour. A whole house generator, also known as a standby generator, is a device that provides backup electrical power to an entire house in the event of a power outage.

Introducing the Guardian 26kW Home Standby Generator, from the #1 Manufacturer of Backup Power Products. With more than 60 years of experience in the backup power industry, it’s no wonder why 8 out of 10 home standby generators installed are Generac. Whole home natural gas or liquid propane generators cost $2,000 to $6,000 without installation.

The better you maintain your generator, the more reliable it will be. Heat control, similarly to high temperature shutdown, can help mitigate any damage done to a generator, which is why the team included it as a category to make up 5% of the total ranking. Those living in warmer regions or simply worried about a generator overheating may appreciate this category at 5% of the total ranking.

10 Best European River Cruises 2024 2025

river cruise europe

Much of the appeal of European river cruises, especially as we emerge from the pandemic with pent-up travel demand, is the small size of the ships, casual atmosphere, and accessibility. Unlike oceangoing ships that carry as many as 5,000 passengers, most river cruise ships accommodate around 150 guests, for a more intimate experience. Balconies, floor-to-ceiling windows, and open-air viewing are features of most river cruise ships, and some offer pools, spas, fitness areas, and jogging tracks.

Spain and Portugal

During wintertime, the best things to do on a Main, Moselle and Rhine river cruise is visit enchanting Christmas markets in cities such as Cologne, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Basel. There are cruises from Amsterdam to Trier, from Trier to Budapest and from Amsterdam to Basel via Trier. City high spots include Cologne, famous for its landmark, a twin-towered Gothic cathedral that took 630 years to build, and Koblenz, overlooked by the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, one of the largest castles in Europe. From Koblenz, longer itineraries take in a section of the Moselle, which winds through the heart of Germany's wine-growing country. Quieter and narrower than the Rhine, the Moselle snakes past small wine towns including Cochem, with a charming old town filled with half-timbered houses.

Portugal's golden Douro River, home to our newest cruises

City highlights include elegant Vienna, with its grand palaces such as Hofburg from which the Habsburgs ruled Austria for 700 years. You can also see the gorgeous white Lipizzaner horses at the Spanish Riding School. The eight-day "Traveling on the Elbe and Havel" cruise covers Germany's north on rivers and canals aboard the Frederick Chopin. Starting in Berlin, the cruise continues to Potsdam for a guided walking tour. A guided tour takes guests through Autostadt Wolfsburg, a park dedicated to the history of the automobile. In Hamburg, there's a city tour and harbor cruise before the cruise continues to the Baltic resort, Laboe, and ends in Kiel.

Part of the fascination of the Seine is that it remains an important commercial waterway. It's navigable by oceangoing vessels as far as Rouen and river cruisers will share the water with all kinds of vessels, including barges laden with freight. It's known as the "City of a Hundred Spires" due to its towering churches, and a huge cathedral, built between the 13th and 16th centuries, is arguably France's most beautiful Gothic church. It was also here that Joan of Arc was notoriously burned at the stake in 1431.

If you like to stay fit and healthy on vacation, Avalon Waterways is the best line for get-up-and-go European river cruises. In addition to regular itineraries, Avalon offers Active & Discovery sailings on the Rhine, Danube, Rhone, Moselle, Seine and Dutch waterways. Work up an appetite with action-packed kayaking, hiking and cycling tours before returning to a well-earned meal.

A two-hour drive from Vega de Terron, Salamanca is an architectural gem with a grand main square built in Spanish baroque style and surrounded by three-story arcade buildings. There really is only one option on the Rhone, but why not take advantage of being in France and add a couple of nights in Paris to the start or end of the cruise? It will give you time to have a taste of the highlights, including the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Champs-Elysees and the Arc de Triomphe. If you're cruising from Lyon, you'll fly into Lyon airport, from which it's a short transfer to your vessel, and out of Marseilles, which is just over an hour by road from Arles. Some operators fly passengers in and out of Lyon, with a coach trip between Avignon and Lyon at the start or end of the cruise.

On the way, Avalon Choice excursions include a culinary walk, cooking class, painting workshop, wine tastings, guided bike rides, and more, with Active, Classic, and Discovery level activities. European Waterways isn't the most widely known European river cruise line, but for travelers craving something truly intimate and unlike any other sailing, it's the best. Perks include a roommate matching service for solo cruisers, competitively priced single supplements and group discounts, plus price match guarantees. Ships offer traditional-style cruising and Exclusive Discovery Series, which provides first-person accounts from locals or expert talks about the destinations you'll be visiting.

Daily escorted walking tours and other excursions provided by the river line take you to key UNESCO World Heritage Sites and other city and village attractions you've come to see. Or you can choose to explore on your own, which is easy since your ship often will dock right in town. Cruise Critic is not a booking agent and does not charge any service fees to users of our site.

It is also worth considering adding a couple of extra nights in Munich, the capital of Bavaria and famous for its beer gardens. The most popular itineraries are one-week sailings between Budapest in Hungary and Passau, situated in Germany and close to the Austrian border, or weeklong round trips from Passau. The Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located between the Austrian towns of Krems and Melk, is particularly stunning.

Moorings in Vienna and Budapest are beside busy roads, and due to the number of ships of the river, you might find yourself moored alongside another vessel. You'll fly into your embarkation port -- Amsterdam, Basel, Cologne and Frankfurt are popular starting points – which is usually a short transfer to your vessel. Rhine cruises can also be booked to coincide with annual events such as the spectacular Rhine in Flames firework festival, which takes place every September to celebrate the wine harvest. Another must for wine-lovers is exploring the interior of France, sipping Cotes du Rhone in such famous winemaking regions as Hermitage and Chateauneuf-du-Pape in Provence and Beaune in Burgundy.

Budapest has the highest number of hot thermal springs than any other city in the world. You'll also be able to take in the lavender fields, haystacks and other scenes that inspired painters like Paul Cezanne and Vincent Van Gogh. That's even before you get to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
